   Download Windows Defender from Windows Market Place. It has the best firewall, and set this program for up-dates in the night. I did that so I wouldn't forget.

   Well basically anything with Norton is going to take up alot of your cpu usage because it runs in the background while your doing other things. I've never tried Mcafee, but i know that Zone Alarm is one of the best because it notifies you of outgoing and incoming packets and through wich port. You can also train it to accept and deny certain programs from accessing your computer. If u don't want to buy it, they have it for free download at download.com

   Use the free ZoneAlarm or the ZoneAlarm Pro (paid). There's also a free firewall called Comodo but i haven't try it yet since i've already has ZoneAlarm Pro. Mcafee is ok but it's not a good firewall, the same thing applies to Norton, it also create may conflict with your softwares and it's hard to remove–leave behind all kind of craps.
