I went to a website with lots of spyware and windows opening up. Immediately after XPshieldsetup had been trying to download, but I think it's a phony. Now my computer is really slow! Please Help!
There is no one BEST program for everyone! Each person's individual computer usage is completely different. Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior. Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.
Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.
Here is a list of free programs that do their job well, for various security tasks. Most of the time, several programs are necessary to maintain a full range of security.
There is a safe site, with software reviews by both the editors and users at www.download.com Most of the following programs can be downloaded from there.
ANTI-VIRUS:
-AVG by Grisoft
-Avira
-Avast
Any *one* of these would probably work well for you! Read the reviews to be sure.
However, none of the AV products will protect you from the full range of infections that are out there. You will also need these other programs:
ANTI-SPYWARE:
Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100 percent accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need *at least* two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.
There are several excellent free ones:
-Spybot, Search and Destroy
-Ad-Aware
-Spyware Blaster
-Superantispyware
-Malwarebytes
FIREWALL:
-Comodo
-Online Armor
-SandBoxie
-Sunbelt Personal Firewall (formerly Kerio)
-Zone Alarm
GENERAL CLEANING:
-Ccleaner
HTH!
Here is a list of free online virus scans Safety.Live.com (That one is Microsoft's) Symantec.com Housecall.TrendMicro.com Comodo.com…Comodo.com offers free manual disinfection and a free security suite from the makers of Comodo Firewall Pro…Avira.com now offers free antivirus and antispyware…besure to turn off onboard antivirus before starting online scanner

u need to get the komodo internet security suite, it is anti-spyware, anti-virus, and anti-everything else bad, it is free from http://www.filebuzz.com/findsoftware/komodo_anti_virus/1.html

why don't you download yourself a porn blocker
What you really want to do is download free version of AVG anti virus. It is really good.

The most comprehensive system is AVG Free. I have been using it for years and in my opinion it is better than Norton and McAfee.
It has been reviewed and highly recommended on Cnet (www.download.com) and there are a ton of user reviews on there that would rant about the effectiveness of this product as much as I do.
Be careful about advertisements online that offer free anti-spyware. These usually end up being spyware themselves. Make sure you download whatever software you choose from a secure, reviewed site such as Cnet.
Yeah, and XPShield sounds completely fake to me.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, I have recently added superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.5 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Good questions. Have you tried sites like http://www.mycuredcomputer.com <—-has anyone else tried them?
I have read some good reviews on their support. Their tools look like I have seen some around the net, but their support and gaurantee make it a winner!
